If smart drugs are of curiosity to you, then the almighty Adrafinil might have come up. This powerful nootropic can be incredibly effective, you just need to know the ideal Adrafinil dosage.
See, the game of cognitive enhancement is a tiring one. It’s hard to figure out which supplements you need to get what you want. I’ve tried many. Some are garbage. Others are outstanding.
For example, Modafinil is a godly nootropic. It was originally designed as medication for narcoleptics and others with various clinical fatigue issues (Source). It’s the single best nootropic I’ve personally experienced for blasting through large amounts of work.
It’s not the best for nootropic creative or imaginative work. That honor goes to Phenibut. But Modafinil is my go to if I need to get a mountain of tedious work done pronto.

Normally, I can’t stay focused on boring work for longer than about 3 hours at a time. I hit a hard wall. I might be physically fine, but my brain cries out for novelty. Modafinil comes with the save. You blow through any normal feelings of fatigue or exasperation.

What Is Adrafinil?
There is a totally legal supplement version of Modafinil out there. It’s called Adrafinil. It’s a regular capsule form of the drug that metabolizes into Modafinil in the liver (Source).
I can personally attest to it as a viable alternative to pharmaceutical Modafinil. The proper Adrafinil dosage is a tricky thing. There are multiple “correct” Adrafinil dosages to play around with.
It’s not quite as powerful as Modafinil at lower dosages. The standard Adrafinil dosage is about 300 mg. That’s more than the maximal recommended dosage of Modafinil which sits at 200 mg.
The effects span far and wide depending on how you use it and what you’re looking for. But how do you find that ideal amount? What are the possible uses?
Firstly, you have two ways to take Adrafinil. You can take it as a capsule or as a powder. It really doesn’t matter how you consume the stuff. That being said – you have more ways to experiment with Adrafinil dosage when using a powder.
Capsules are easier, though. So, it’s kind of a toss-up. If you want capsules, they generally come in 300 mg servings. This is the best place I’ve found to buy them.
You can also take it as a bulk powder with a scooper. This scooper comes included with most suppliers of Adrafinil.
One reputable supplier of Adrafinil powder is nootropics depot. They’re a legit source. If you don’t get a scooper, you can buy a cheap scale from Amazon and weigh it out. This is a pain in the arse.
Common Adrafinil Dosage: What You Must Know
Hopefully, you guys are salivating by now. No more waiting. Let the games and cognitive enhancement begin.
Here are the standard dosages:
I’ve read reports of some who take as low as 50 mg of adrafinil and report benefits. Personally, I did this once and felt no benefit. That’s only one time and I’m only one man. Don’t put too much stock into that. Keep it in mind though.
I’d say you might experience the mildest focus enhancing effects if you combine it with caffeine and exercise. That’s about it.
This is where the serious effects start. This is not the most ideal for plowing through meticulous tasks, but better for a subtler boost. Take this amount while you work out of a café or while doing creative writing.
It helps you most with what’s already enjoyable. It won’t make the annoying stuff any less excruciating.
Your levels of focus won’t be as high as 200-300 mg worth, but it’ll come with less potential side effects. 100 mg won’t give you laser focus, but it will stave off mental and physical fatigue a bit.
The advantage here is that it’s more reasonable in social situations. You could go on a date using this amount without any negative side effects. You’ll have your work enhanced without acting like an obsessed maniac. Nothing wrong with that, but it scares people a bit when you’re at Starbucks.
200 mg is a nice in-between Adrafinil dosage. I don’t have a ton of experience with using 200 mg, but it has its time and place. You’ll get some of that wild-eyed zeal from 300 mg without the full-blown side effects.
This is a great first-time dosage when you’re ready to get down to business and work all day.
You might never need 300 mg. Some people are different.
If you’re already very healthy, then 200 mg might be plenty. This is ideal if you can swing it. You might not feel the side effects of 300 mg, but it varies for first time users. Test the waters slowly.
Alright, this is the big boi of the standard Adrafinil dosages. This is the most I recommend taking for 95% of you guys. If you’ve got your life in order, you don’t need more than this. Well, you may for pulling all-nighters, but that’ll be discussed below.
You can be hungover and still salvage a good day on this Adrafinil dosage. This amount allows you work well while in an extremely unideal state. You can feel like a hot mess and still get work done.
It may not be your best work, but it’ll be passable. You’ll get through it. It applies to workouts too, although it may still be a brutal process to get through.
If you’re firing on all cylinders, then its life on God mode. You’ll have seemingly unlimited focus and inspiration to finish a task. Whatever needs to get done will get done, period.
It gives you the power to get through that stupid list of technical issues your website is experiencing. Adrafinil allows you to sift through boring source after boring source for your history paper. It helps you get through work that’s no fun, but needs to be done.
If your life is in order, this is as much as you’ll ever need. There are only two exceptions in which someone may need more than this.
One exception is for a person suffering from legitimate narcolepsy or chronic fatigue syndrome. But you should get in contact with a doctor and ask about pharmaceutical Modafinil if that’s the case. I’m not a doctor and don’t claim to be.
You’re a madman if you take this much Adrafinil. Seriously, this is a bit too high of an Adrafinil dosage. The only way I’d recommend doing this is if you take 300 mg early in the morning and another 300 mg in the late afternoon.
Then, you’ve got split Adrafinil dosing and you should be able to work 12+ – which gives you a solid Modafinil-like feel for the day.
But honestly, if you’re looking for hardcore cognitive enhancement, which 600 mg of Adrafinil will offer you, then you’re better off with Modafinil, mate. Seriously.
10 Quick Tips to Ensure You Find the Ideal Adrafinil Dose
The other exception will be covered in just a second. Tired already? You’ll need that Adrafinil.
Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. So, let’s dig in. It’s time to talk about the absolute best ways to find the perfect Adrafinil dosage:
1). Figure Out Your Base Tolerance
Seems like common sense, but common sense isn’t always so common. Your previous experience with nootropics makes a massive difference in what you need. Someone like me needs a much higher dosage to get the same effect out of adrafinil or modafinil.
This isn’t due to physical effects. Modafinil/Adrafinil doesn’t build up a significant chemical tolerance (Source).
This is due to a psychological tolerance that develops after a period of continuous usage. It’s subtle, but you’ll notice if you become a regular user.
The physical effects are already subtle, so the psychological boost will lessen.
It’ll become your new normal if done every day. That’s no different than any other drug or supplement.
Here’s the tricky part. The normal pill form of adrafinil is in 300 mg standard doses. That’s a good amount if you’re tolerant.
But you don’t need that much if you’re a newbie to Adrafinil. You can start with as low as 100 mg if you combine it with fasting and caffeine.
That amount remains most effective if you take adrafinil 2x max in my experience. Some will say 3x, but even that begins to build psychological tolerance.
I’ve also taken it every day for short periods, which I don’t recommend. Only do this if you’re going hard in the paint and want to crush a hard project, mid-term paper etc.
In this case, you can take the standard capsule dose of 300 mg. Keep in mind that even a lower Adrafinil dosage might get you in trouble if you take it too late.
2). Taking Adrafinil Too Late
Adrafinil is a VERY long-lasting drug. Its half-life is nothing to be played with.
Modafinil has a half-life of approximately 13 hours. That isn’t the peak time for the full effectiveness of the drug.
Still, that’s extremely significant. It means that the drug is in your system for a very long time. For that reason, I can’t recommend taking any dose within about 12 hours of when you want to get to bed.
If you do, take the lesser amount I recommended for newbies earlier. 100-150 mg is doable just after lunch if you plan to hit the hay around 11-12:00 A.M.
The full 300 mg? Forget about it. You’ll struggle, and it’ll likely only happen after you lay there restless for a while. I’ve taken 100 mg mid-afternoon and been okay. I’ve also taken 300 mg just past noon.
That was too late. I stayed awake restless. Don’t try this at home kids.
The only time to take more than 300 mg? You need to stay up for 18+ hours. Pulling all-nighters is not healthy nor recommended, but it is what it is.
If you got to make a mad dash to finish that term paper or finish an e-book on time, then it’s an emergency solution.
300+ mg can come in handy for these situations. Of course, many people use the good ole’ standby of caffeine to help them close the deal. That’s fine, but combining a cup (or cups) of joe can be another story. Here’s the skinny on how that affects your Adrafinil dosage.
Adrafinil interacts with other drugs to varying degrees. It’s nothing to be paranoid about, but it’s worth mentioning.
Caffeine is one such common drug. Can you use caffeine with Adrafinil?
Absolutely, I’d even say adrafinil is strengthened with caffeine usage and vice versa.
Still, too much of anything good can quickly become bad.
One side effect of adrafinil can be mild anxiety and irritability. Caffeine can also have these negative side effects.
I don’t condone mega-dosing adrafinil AND caffeine. I’d say 1 or 2 cups of joe with the standard 300 mg dose is good.
Don’t use that much if you’re a caffeine addict. Try the smaller 100 or 200 mg dosage. I’ve taken 300 mg of adrafinil with 4+ cups of caffeine once before.
Didn’t feel too good. It felt much more like a cracked-out Adderall feeling. I was by myself working so socializing wasn’t an issue. Even alone, I couldn’t focus the way I needed to get the most work done.
Don’t become a spaz like I did, avoid mega-dosing the two together. I recommend cycling them for the best of both worlds. But what about more powerful medications and their interaction with adrafinil? Glad you asked.
4). Timing the “Peak,” of the Adrafinil Flow
How long does Adrafinil take to work?
Most studies done on Modafinil or Adrafinil report that the peak blood concentration for either drug is somewhere between 2-3 hours (Source). This means that the high peaks at about 2-3 hours in also.
I can verify this to a degree. The drug is powerful for a long period of time. Generally, I still find it noticeable and helpful 10+ hours after taking it.
But the most potent period is 2-4 hours after ingestion. Plan accordingly if you want to hit the ground running.
For example, you want to get a solid 3-4 hours of deep work in on an online business.
Wake up, take the adrafinil and wait about 2 hours before you begin working.
Getting into the full swing of things will take about 30 minutes so the timing will be ideal. You’ll be hitting the peak of the focus right when you’re getting into the work.
This way, you’ll get a minimum 2-3 hours of laser focus. But maybe you want to elongate that peak flow a bit. Got you covered there too.
5). Split the Dosage for Maximum Effect
I typically take one solid dosage. That’s because I’m trying to maximize the effect for a short period of time.
But what about if you want the longest possible buzz?
Simple, just split up a dosage you would take anyway. Remember, you can’t take a significant amount too late or you won’t be able to sleep.
A good way to do it is to take about 150 mg when you first get up and another 150 mg about 2-3 hours later.
If you want the moderate 200 mg dose, then do two timings of 100 mg respectively.
The peak flow won’t be as strong this way, but it’ll last twice as long. You can decide for yourself which way you want to go.
I’d say you should single dose if you need full focus for a short period of time.
If you have a mountain of monotonous work, it’s superior to space it out. You don’t need as much undivided focus but simply need more enthusiasm to slog through the work.
You can’t be too hyped up though. This brings me to my next point.
6). Know Your Potential for Anxiety.
This one is very individual. Anxiety is one of the more common side effects of Adrafinil for some people. Adrafinil isn’t a stimulant, but it shares this downside with other stimulants.
Those who have no significant social or generalized anxiety are fine. For those with minor anxiety, it can be an issue. Keep your own history of mental, and emotional stability in mind before you use Adrafinil.
As a general rule of thumb, a history of anxiety will correlate with a higher chance of experiencing anxiety while using Adrafinil.
If that’s you, start with a small dosage of 100 mg and assess yourself carefully. If you feel fine, then feel free to slowly increase.
300 mg could give you problems. This is especially important if you’re in a hectic or crowded public area while using higher levels. Many struggle with anxiety in fast-paced public settings while completely sober.
A full Adrafinil dosage could worsen that.
Stick to amounts between 100-200 mg if in public. In private, slowly inch toward 300 mg carefully and see if you’re okay.
I’m not a doctor or medical professional, and I can’t give advice as well as they can. Always see a trusted one first before embarking on any new diet, nootropic or exercise plan.
Improper habits can induce anxiety in anybody who isn’t careful. Let’s talk about a few ways to avoid that.
7). Avoid Regular Extreme Fasting
Some of you maniacs out there are probably rolling your eyes. Let me guess, you love taking Adrafinil in the morning and working all day without food. Coffee and intense music your only companions while you crush it.
I get it. I’ve done that too. It does feel badass and focus is available in spades.
But I don’t recommend it. Fasting can already induce some extra anxiety. Coffee can induce anxiety. Adrafinil can induce anxiety.
See a pattern? Even those who don’t suffer from anxiety can experience it here. You may be able to work like a demon, but it takes a toll on your emotional and mental stability.
You’d have to be especially careful when in public. But I’ve even experienced a bit of noticeable anxiety while completely secluded when rocking this crazy combination.
It’s okay once and a while. Don’t make it a regular habit. Fasting is also taxing on your adrenals and adrafinil/coffee might be (Source).
The whole idea behind “adrenal fatigue,” is a little murky, and it’s difficult to get severe symptoms if you’re a guy without an extremely stressful life.
But it’s a relevant concern if you’re stacking multiple potential contributors on top of one another on a regular basis.
The lady readers should be more careful though. Guys can get away with more stress from a variety of sources than women can. The problems tend to be the same, but guys tend to have way more leeway lifestyle wise before they run into serious problems.
Sucks, but I don’t make the rules. If you’re a fella this might make you overly confident and reckless.
But you have to consider the long term.
You don’t want to ruin your vitality or health for the future. Keep it reasonable. Drink a cup of coffee and fast through the morning.
Don’t down a pot of coffee throughout the day and fast 20+ hours while using adrafinil. Make it a rare occurrence if you do. There’s not one amount to recommend here.
That’s because I don’t recommend it period. But if you must, stick to the lower range of 100-200 mg.Caffeine and fasting are already going to tune you up enough. You don’t also need a full serving of adrafinil.
If you do, your base state of health isn’t good enough. Health is where we go now.
8). Don’t Out Dose Poor Health or Habits
This is an all too common problem in the entitled age we live in. Many of you want a magic pill. You’re not willing to grab the low hanging fruit.
There’s no pill, powder, supplement or drug that makes up for a strong healthy body and mind.
Read that line again. You cannot out supplement or out drug a poor body and mind. It’s just not possible. You can’t “biohack,” your way to peak performance. You can only achieve very mediocre results while spending too much money.
That’s more hate than I usually spew, but this is a big problem. Before you even consider Adrafinil. Ask these questions:
- Do I get a solid 8-9 hours of rest most nights?
- Do I engage in some type of solid resistance training at least 3x a week?
- Are you getting 80-90% of my calories from quality whole foods?
- Do I abuse alcohol or other drugs?
- Do I get regular sunlight, fresh air and social interaction?
- Would I consider myself a mentally, physically and emotionally strong person?
That’s just a good starting list. The point is that if you’re not an above average person in terms of your everyday habits, there’s no drug that’s going to make up for that.
If you abuse drugs, live on junk food, lack healthy social interaction, don’t get exercise and don’t take care of yourself then no drug can help you.
You’ll still heavily underachieve at best. You’re taking all the stuff the gurus take.
It doesn’t matter. There are no magic pills, potions or powders. Adrafinil is wonderful if you have your act together.
Otherwise, don’t bother. Spend at least six months attending to the list above. Only when you have those above checkpoints covered should you consider Adrafinil.
No dose makes up for a lack of a solid foundation. Adrafinil can be a pro tool to take your game over the top. It’s not always necessary for everyone.
9). To Cycle or Not to Cycle
I’ve already warned about using Adrafinil as a crutch. You guys know I don’t condone it. What about using it indefinitely? Some of you are working extremely hard. I get that. You might feel you’re right at the tipping point on an important project.
Or maybe you just need it to plow through several intense days in a row before your econ final. That’s completely fine.
I think it’s appropriate to use it like this for short periods of time when necessary. Even then, I can’t recommend any more than five days straight at 300 mg. That’s tops for when you’re in a bind, and you need every ounce of energy and focus you can muster.
More days straight at that dosage, and you begin to get a diminished effect psychologically. There’s no physical tolerance buildup.
You don’t have to worry about that. But the psychological tolerance is very real. It becomes your new normal.
Normal then also becomes slightly worse. I’ve used it several days in a row at 300 mg before. Going back to “sober,” doesn’t feel horrible, but it’s a little flat.
It sucks to have a psychological withdrawal period at all. If you take it for longer than seven days in a row at 300 mg, then I at least recommend cycling between the 100-150 mg and 200-300 mg amounts.
Alright, this brings me to the concluding point in this thorough guide.
10). Hacking Sleep Deprivation
Sleep deprivation is terrible. Avoid it if possible. But you like going out once in a blue moon. Hell, you like going out during a bunch of different moons. That’s all good.
Or you need to survive the exam day after that all-nighter you just pulled. Adrafinil’s got you covered. This is the only time I recommend taking 300 mg on a normal day-to-day scenario. Here it makes sense.
300 mg will almost erase sleep deprivation’s negative effects. You still know you’re tired, but you could care less once you get started working. Take the full dose and crush that final or project with reckless abandon.
